Telenor Pakistan in collaboration with Plan International has announced the launch of scale up phase of its school rehabilitation and improvement project in Nowshehra. The announcement was made recently during the launch ceremony attended by Atif Khan, Education Minister Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, officials of Education Department KP, representatives of Plan International, National Rural Support Program and Telenor Pakistan.

It is pertinent to note that Telenor Pakistan has already allocated PKR 142 million towards the reconstruction and rehabilitation of 44 partially damaged flood affected government middle schools in Punjab, KP and Sindh over a period of over 2 years. More than 10,000 students, across the three provinces in the country will benefit from this project. Additionally Telenor Pakistan will be providing support through its m-learning services and assistance towards the capacity building of 88 teachers and 44 school management committees.

In a message, Muhammad Aslam Hayat, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Telenor Pakistan said, “Following the successful completion of the pilot phase of Telenor Pakistan’s School Rehabilitation and Improvement project wherein 4 public schools in Sothern Punjab were rehabilitated and improved, we are glad to announce today the launch of scale up phase in District Nowshehra to rehabilitate and improve 14 schools and empower over 3,000 students. Improving the delivery and quality of education is one of the strategic objectives of our corporate responsibility programs and we believe that establishment of advanced IT labs will open the door of internet and digital world to the students of flood affected areas which is line with our ambition to bring the internet for all”.

On this occasion, Atif Khan, Education Minister KP appreciated the efforts of Telenor Pakistan, PLAN International and NRSP, and termed this initiative as an example for other organizations to follow for the betterment of the society.

The rehabilitation and reconstruction includes improving infrastructure of the school building, water sanitation & hygiene (WASH) facilities, clean drinking water facility, construction of IT labs, solar electrification and in-house maintenance of the school facilities. Similarly school improvement plan includes teacher/student training on use of ICT for education and improved conceptual clarity through Telenor’s m-learning service, Disaster Risk Reduction Trainings, formation of School Management Committees and Student Representative Councils for improved governance and accountability.

Telenor Pakistan has been consistently working towards the relief and rehabilitation of flood affected victims since 2010. It has contributed close to Rs.300 million towards relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected and continues to pledge its support through different initiatives under its Corporate Responsibility programs.
